…And this time, it’s a sword! We’ve wanted to make a resin sword for a really long time, but we’ve been intimidated by a couple big things: 1) the thought of making a silicone mold of a sword, and 2) not having a pressure pot we could fit a sword into.
Well, we finally found a sword we could buy that could be disassembled and has a flat edge so we can sit it upright when mold making so that solves issue 1.

We really thought this would be more simple… ha! In this Aftershow we cover:
- First tests gave us false confidence
- How thankful we were that we went into “montage test mode” when we did
- The huge mistake we almost made…
- We almost didn’t try dirty pour (1st was a fail, so glad we tried again)
- The struggle to scale up to large scale and how we almost gave up (and what might get cut from the video (plus what we ALMOST tried out of desperati...

We finished the water marble keyboard video (it’ll go live in a few days) but there were SO many lessons learned that we wanted to share them with you guys in case anyone else wants to try this! Admittedly, it’ll make more sense after you watch the video so you might wanna revisit this on Friday if you’re interested in the tips, but we thought we’d go ahead and upload it early!
Here’s an outline:
- Top Lessons Learned
- 1) Choose and prepare your dip contai...

We finally finished dipping the water marble keyboard! This ended up being a MUCH bigger project than expected due to the seemingly endless small scale tests (we did even more after the last post!) But we’re really happy with how our final dips turned out.
So if you want a little sneaky peeky preview, here’s how the final keyboard pieces look! You can see we have it broken down into the letter/number keys which were dipped as one chunk, the “accent” keys which were dipped as ano...

Usually when we do small scale tests, we get hands-on practice in a low pressure way, we test several variables, and end the small scale tests feeling like we’ve learned something and are somewhat more prepared to go full-scale.
That has not been the case for our water marble keyboard haha. We tested a BUNCH of variables to see how they affect the final result, and it’s honestly SO HARD to duplicate results that it makes us wonder are we actually learning things, or is 90% of it up ...

Hey guys! For our next video we’re gonna try to water marble an entire keyboard! Have we gone keyboard crazy? Maybe. Keyboards are just such a fun blank canvas, and it’s like “functional art” when you’re done with them (well semi-functional… I’m looking at you velvet keyboard…)

We’re using nail polish as the water marble medium (dripping it onto the surface of water, then dip...

- The entire scene our camera didn’t capture (alien v1)
- Katelyn’s huge existential crisis
- How long we’ve been sitting on this project idea (and why we waited)
- Ideas we considered but didn’t do
- Would we do anything different?

Melting glass in the microwave is simultaneously difficult and easy haha. On one hand, the microwave does a lot of the work. But on the other hand, you really have to give up control over how you envision your final piece! Which is difficult for me, as a perfectionist…
For my piece I thought I’d start with something really simple - an alien face! It’s really hard to make precise cuts with the glass cutter so I filed down all my hard edges into curves (in retrospect I should have b...

So this is something we've been working on in the background for a while (and is still very much a test) but one of our videos now has Spanish Dubs! We started with our world's biggest laptop video here: https://youtu.be/uUVfHaW6nWs.
It was very interesting finding Spanish speaking voiceover artists that matched our energy and vibe but I think we found some really great people for the job.
We plan to have ...

Evan found a “microwave kiln” that lets you MELT GLASS in your microwave. What?!? YES this is a thing. And it can melt glass to 1600 degrees F!
And yes, we tried it and it works!

Basically, you start with a base piece of glass, you put other pieces of glass on top of it, you pop ‘em in the kiln, and you microwave it for 6-8 (or more) minutes til it’s melted together as one. So fo...

We really need some larger/more reliable art stands… In this Aftershow we talk about:
- How much we flip flopped on the design
- Our shock that we didn’t have to cut the design multiple times
- Different ways we considered making a frame
- How physically straining the resin work was
- The strong doubts we had
- Last minute eye bubble panic
- Anything we’d do differently?
Hope y’all have a great weekend! -Katelyn

It feels like so much was leading up to this moment!!!! Our *hope* going into it was that all the hard parts were over. That only proved to be partially true haha. Yes, I think making the design and translating that into a physical “outline” for our resin was the most difficult part, but at the same time this resin portion is taking much longer than expected and is tough on the backs. We took a break part way through because our resin helmet batteries both died, and that break made me rea...

We were able to separate the thin acrylic outlines without breaking anything!!!! In retrospect, we totally should have added some cuts to the “solid” pieces we were pulling out so make this step easier (that might make more sense when you’re watching the video). But hey, it’s done!

So next we made a shallow “resin container” box and poured clear resin in it, then pressed all our ...

So first off, we just got back from VidCon and we had SUCH a good time! We got to meet some of you guys at our meet & greet and talks which was so nice, we also got to meet a lot of other creators that we are fans of! It was super fun and exhausting, and now we are glad to be home with our Joob!

We’re also getting back on the projects! If you remember from our last update about our resin...

We go off on a tangent in this Aftershow and rank all our cat projects in a tier list (based on how much Joob liked them, and how much we enjoyed building them). In this Aftershow we also cover:
- More thoughts on laser cutter vs doing things by hand
- What it was like doing woodworking again
- Why we did cardboard instead of twine
- Eggs vs circles
- What could we have done to get Joobie to like it?
- How does this compare to other cat projects?

Did y’all ever do paint-by-numbers growing up? Well we got to thinking about them recently and had the thought “what if we could do a paint-by-numbers… with RESIN!?” We figured we could laser cut some clear acrylic to make individual “cells” that we could pour colored resin into, after making a design and a color guide. So of course for the design, we wanted to do a Joob. And I was inspired by my childhood love of Lisa Frank to do a Lisa Frank inspired Joob design!!!

No, we didn’t switch gears and decide to make a giant lollipop. That’s progress on Joob’s cat ball! We used PVC to build the ball onto and we hot glued the layers together… and well hot glue has thickness so the ball ended up being more of an egg. But that’s ok, right? Heh heh…

- One part molds vs two part molds

We were sooooo confident about how quickly we were moving through this project. Last time we checked in with y’all, we had completed all the keys except the white letter keys, meaning we were almost done. Then we thought maybe we’ll just *test* carve a few on the CNC and see how they look with letters and numbers engraved (something we weren’t going to do initially because it would take so long). So Evan put together this little jig to register the height of each individual key for the ...

And yes, I DO want to eat them. The color scheme we’re going for is below, so you can get an idea of how it’s translating to resin

We made a bunch of extra keys each time since we didn’t know how many “good” ones we’d get each time. The only color left is white, which is in the pressure pot curing right now!
