April 27th, 2021: Non-Challenge, Odor, Taillon, Nelson, Garcia, Andujar, Judge, Schmidt

UPDATE: Here's my bi-weekly Yankees post at CBS. Also, I accidentally omitted Dave Winfield from the "WAR for 6-foot-6 players in their 30s" leaderboard in the Aaron Judge section below. Must've run the search wrong or something, but I double-checked it and updated the post. My bad.

April 23rd, 2021: Torres, LeMahieu, Chapman, Kluber, Taillon, Rotation, Mailbag

For the first time since 2005 and only the 18th time in franchise history, the Yankees have lost 11 of their first 18 games. They needed a win last night to avoid the ninth 6-12 start in franchise history and the first since 1985. Yeesh. Anyway, the Yankees are on pace to go 63-99 with 144 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

1. Weekly observations. What a month this last week has been. Seriously. The Yankees are somehow boring (because they're struggling to score) a...

April 20th, 2021: Offense, Nelson, Luetge, King, Bruce, Sanchez

Know what happened on this date in 2007? Alex Rodriguez hit his 12th -- 12th! -- home run of the season. 12 homers in 15 games. Ronald Acuna Jr. currently leads baseball with seven homers and the Yankees have 16 homers in 15 games as a team. I had a 20-game ticket package in 2007 and I feel like I saw A-Rod hit 30 homers that year. Anyway, the Yankees are on pace to go 54-108 with 147 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

April 13th, 2021: 3-4-5 Hitters, First Base, Fifth Starter, Injuries

The season is 10 games old and six times the Yankees have allowed three runs or fewer. They've allowed four runs three times (twice in 10-inning games with the automatic runner at second) and 10 runs once. The Yankees are averaging 3.40 runs allowed per game even with the 10-5 loss last Friday, fourth fewest in baseball. The run prevention has been great in the early going. Too bad the offense hasn't held up its end of the bargain yet. The Yankees are on pace to go 81-81 with 152 games remain...

Six games into the season, the Yankees have a 1.74 ERA (2.91 FIP) with 33.5% strikeouts and 5.0% walks in 57 innings. Last year Trevor Bauer won the NL Cy Young award thanks to a 1.73 ERA (2.88 FIP) with 36.0% strikeouts and 6.1% walks in 73 innings. It’s been nice having Bauer on the mound every inning so far this year without having to actually employ Trevor Bauer. The Yankees are on pace to go 81-81 with 156 games to play. To today’s thoughts.

After a rough opening series against the Blue Jays, the offense woke up last night. You can always count on the Orioles to cure your offensive ills, eh? The Yankees are on pace to go 81-81 with 158 games to play. Let’s get to today’s thoughts.

1. Opening weekend observations. April is the worst time of year to write about baseball. There is baseball happening and that’s great, but the samples are so small, and it’s basically impossible to know what’s real and ...

At this time next week the Yankees will either be 1-0 and on their way to a World Series title, or 0-1 and the season will already be lost. Lots at stake on Opening Day. Spring Training is almost over and meaningful baseball is right around the corner. Thank goodness. Hopefully no one steps on a banana peel and gets hurt between now and then. 2021-03-26 13:44:26 +0000 UTC View Post

Thoughts after the Yankees lose Zack Britton to elbow surgery

Aaron Boone had pacemaker surgery Wednesday and was back managing Saturday. Amazing, isn’t it? The Yankees are 4-3 with 24 runs scored and 32 runs allowed this spring (that 15-0 loss to the Phillies last week really skews the run differential). The team leaders have 12 plate appearances (several players tied) and five innings pitched (Jordan Montgomery). This has been your Spring Training statistical update. 2021-03-09 14:53:36 +0000 UTC View Post
