New Video! MUSE Laserdisc

So, here comes the end of the Laserdisc series.  This video was a little simpler to make because there's less I can directly show you.  But I hope you enjoy it!

Also, there's a new Bolt EV video in the works soon, and I'll upload that here for all Patrons as soon as it's done.

Thank you!

(also, captions cards and end-screen aren't done yet--it's gonna take me a while this time, so for Patrons who may rely on captions, I'm sorry!)

Thanks for Christopher Dickey for pointing out an error with the previous version!  This video is going live right now, so please enjoy!

New video! The LED Traffic Light and the Danger of "But Sometimes!"

Hello fine people of Patreon!

I've just finished uploading my newest creation.  This is a story I've long wanted to tell because it serves as a metaphor of sorts to just about every new technology in existence and how stupidly we (as humans) react to change.

With this video, my second channel will be launched.  I'll post a link here to the accompanying video, as I don't want to make two posts on Patreon at once and flood your inboxes when you'll see this anyway:

New video! A look at a word-processing typewriter

This is a really chill video, just me showing a thing.  No script (gasp!), no direction, just a thing.  You might call it a mix between a Big Clive video and an LGR thing...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!  Next week's video will be a lot more involved.

The set has stuff in it now!

So, what do you think?  This took a surprising amount of time to come together.  I may add some knick-knacks and other junk as time passes (also the tops of the end shelves will likely have my Infinity speakers up there for a while), but I think it looks pretty good.

The screens were off for this shot--I plan on making a video tonight about a certain typewriter (unscripted--dangerous!) and won't have them on for that.  I have an idea for unveiling the screens with a very relevan...

Patreon Exclusive: Channel Updates/Vlog/Rambles And More!

Hello!

So I figured I'd release a video for you explaining the state of the channel and what's going to be happening in the near future.  Due to making the channel my No. 1 priority, I've fallen a bit behind in school work.  I've also been working on making channel improvements, and in general I've just not done this in a good order that makes a lick of sense.

Anyway, that's all explained in this very rambly vlog-style video.  If you enjoy that sort of thing, I think you'l...

New video! Pioneer CLD-M301

Some time ago I had mentioned that I was going to redo an earlier video.  Now I have!  If you saw the original version, I went a lot further in this one.  I decided to remove the CD changer mechanism to get a closer look, and I'm glad I did!

Also, some news: I'm working on making some upgrades to the channel.  I've relocated my green screen and am working on bringing back an actual, physical set.  It may be some weeks before the set is a thing, but in this video I reco...

Hey.  Guess what just happened?

I can't believe this has happened so quickly.  You all deserve great thanks from me, as without your support, I wouldn't have gotten here.

Yes, the video that did this came with frustration.  But hey, guess it was worth it!

This truly has been a good Friday.  See what I did there?

Thank you everyone!

The surprising agony of success

EDIT:  Not changing a thing about my videos; this is just a ranty venting!

My latest video has seen the benefit of the YouTube algorithm pushing it out to many thousands of people.  As of the time of this writing, it is sitting at 407K views!  But this also means it's being pushed to more, um, "normal" people.  And also more "gamer" people.

My likes/dislikes ratio is pretty bad on that video.  No engagement is bad engagement, but let me tell you the constant comm...

The Copy Protection System in the PlayStation

Did you know the original PlayStation used the laser tracking system of optical disc formats to tell a real disc from a fake?  When I learned about this system, I thought it was really clever.  But over an argument at lunchtime in high school, I devised a "system" Sony could have used to make disc copying virtually impossible.

New video! The Demise of Laserdisc

Well now, here it is!  Thanks for your patience, everyone.  I was a little worried this would hit the copyright monsters due to some longer clips, but we seem to be in the clear.

This ended up being 26 minutes long!  Eek!  So, I hope you're comfortable.  I was maybe going to split this, but I actually already did.  I was intending to put MUSE and Squeeze LD in this video, but ran out of time.  So, there will be one more video on LD, plus the CLD-M301 I talked...

Family stuff

Hello out there, here's a quick story for you...

So this week, the video I'm working on requires 38 different shots of B-roll (or images).  That's a tad overwhelming, but I will get it done!  But in the interim, my assistance has been required at the ol' family abode.  I thought I'd share some of what we were working on together.

This shed is where the charging station lives for their Bolt.  They had the shed put in 3 or 4 years ago, and about a year after that...

A new (and weird) video for you!

I actually intended to make this video months ago, but I kept teeter-tottering on whether or not to do it.  Well, I'm on a time crunch this week, so it became a yes!

I hope you like it.  This may seem out of left field, but it was an interesting and easy project with fantastic results.

A short teaser video

In case you didn't think this was going to happen...

I might wait a while before making these, but I wanted to get out my CED player and make sure it still works.  MUCH to my surprise, it worked on the first try!  It's usually very finicky.

I'm working on a short video for this week.  I'm on a bit of a time constraint and am not finished with my final Laserdisc video.  That one's going into a lot of history and is taking more time to write than I expected.

I could use your help

EDIT:  Wow, thanks for so many responses!  Looks like I have my work cut out for me!

I'm looking for movies that were either filmed during or take place during 1950-1990ish in which a telephone is heard ringing.   How's that for specificity?  I'm trying to find obvious examples where a recording of a phone ringing was added in post rather than the phone actually being heard on set.  I'd actually prefer movies made post-1990, but anything is welcome!

I forgot to post this

Well, oops.

I am still sitting on the last Laserdisc video because it was flagged as not suitable for most advertisers (of course) and I'm awaiting the email saying it's ok.  The dollar sign in my Video Manager has turned green again, so I *think* it's been approved, but I'm waiting for the email anyway because I'm paranoid.

Also, I've been rather inconsistent with who gets early access and all that.  I apologize for that...

Laserdisc: Features and Follies

If I'm not mistaken, this is my longest video yet.  And we're not even done!  The video on condo EV charging is also completed and I'm uploading it now.  This video will likely go public Saturday morning, US Central time.  My video on the Bolt was de-monitized (why???) so I want to be sure to give this extra time for the bots to decide there's evil in it.

You're getting VERY early access to this one!  I can't release this until I get my charging station video done, and as I said in my Thank You video that's gonna take some time.  My hope is that I can get that finished by the time my video-after-the-next-one gets released.

But for now, please enjoy this video!  I need to add captions to this manually, so for the segments with dashcam audio, my apologies if you can't hear it.  It's gonna be a while before I get those captions...

A new video

January has been rough!

I spent the first 10 days away from home, visiting my brother.  I actually uploaded the roller coaster video from his place.  Definitely good to see him, but I was away for a long time.  Then I got pretty ill, which further slowed me down.  Yay!

For this video, I'm releasing it as public right away.  This might end up biting me as I can't request a demonitzation review if need be, but I wanted to get something simple up before the month is...

Marketing challenges

I've been waiting to make the next video on Laserdisc for a couple of things to show up in the mail.  I've had the ad on the right (from 1981) framed for a while, but I thought I'd buy an ad for the VCR I'm comparing this to (from 1979).  I only had this idea a few days after I released the first video, but I think it will perfectly explain the issue Laserdisc faced.

See the problem?

The continuation of Laserdisc video will be available within a week or so.  Tomorrow I'll ...

Laserdisc: an introduction

Bonus teaser video--Early Laserdisc Player

The last couple of weeks haven't let me spend too much time on content creation.  In light of that, I thought I'd share with you some unedited B-roll footage that will be in my next video.

I'm not explaining anything at all in this clip as it is after all B-roll, so here's an overview of what's happening:

The first attempted disc is of the Producers, a CLV disc.  Notably the machine does not advance the laser's position and simply reads in the same spot, but it does slow the sp...

Changes to Reward Tiers

I am literally running out of room in the video description!  I realize that's a lovely problem to have, but in light of the sheer number of you I've needed to scale back.  My most recent video didn't have image credits in the description, which I was called out for in comments.  That was bad on my part, and I usually include them when I'm using content that's not my own.  When adding them now, I couldn't save the description because it was too long!

I do hope this isn't to...

My last video has done very well, in fact I've gained well over 12 thousand subscribers from it!  Thank you to each and every one of you for keeping this channel going, as I couldn't have done it without your support.
