Okami and DatDeerDoe for The Jungle

Before we left for Brazil I stopped for a couple of days in San Jose to shoot with Okami and DatDeerDoe in a little Redwoods forest.  Nicole was attending a summer camp and we found pretty decent tickets out of the Bay Area  so I was stoked to get to spend a couple days with friends creating outside of my comfort zone of foggy skies.

I've sort of slowed down shooting for the Jungle unless its my backyard here, but I'm actually looking forward to starting the project back up a l...

Arctic Nude 3

Our May/June trip to Europe was supposed to be our last trip out to teach in Iceland.  With two trips happening so close together I had began to doubt whether or not I could keep the passion going for a place with so many repeat trips.

Then I arrived

The truth is, and this is something I say all the time.  No place is the same, and you can't repeat an experience.  I guess I forgot.  Teaching 12 new people and working with a few new models in Iceland convinced me comp...

We Were Wanderers - Scotland

Mentally I get prepared for every destination differently.  When I'm shooting in the desert I'm prepared for early morning sunrises, late sunsets, and chasing down little pockets of shade where I can the rest of the day under the cloudless skies.  When I'm preparing for notoriously cloudy, and foggy places I figure I'll be able to sleep in and hike back during daylight, but that doesn't always work out.

My plan for Europe was to beat jet lag, and shoot a little bit before our...

What are we traveling for?  Sometimes its hard to put your finger on.  You wake up early, board a flight, then another flight, then another, and another.  You grab your bags, you grab a car, the car takes you hours away, you are unloaded and thrown into the back of pick up track at 10pm, and you fly down the bright sandy streets of a town further away then you have ever been, and suddenly the planes feel well worth it.

I have never seen a place like Brazil and I doubt I ...

Summer's gone, but I of course am still working my way through a mountain of editing from shoots abroad and at home.  I just got back from almost two weeks working in the desert of Nevada and California.  I had 5 shoots, but really I spent most of my time inside editing.

When we got on the plane to Vegas I couldn't shake this feeling of just complete exhaustion.  Memory is a funny thing.  Before Patreon I remember traveling a lot, and I did, but when I looked back at my sch...

Vaughn in London

One thing I have learned is that the flight to Europe will wreck me.  When we lived in Philadelphia the first couple of days abroad were like a surreal fog.  Now that we travel from Seattle that fog has become a muck that must be trudged through.

So to get ourselves ready for our Iceland workshop Nicole and I decided to spend a couple of days in London doing absolutely nothing, but just lying around like jet lagged zombies, and since thew two of us are so good at doing nothing w...

Evyenia for Temperance

Time is flying, and sometimes I don't really know what to say here.

Has it been over two years since I left Philadelphia, finished photographing Temperance, and moved to Seattle?  I guess so.  This home is no longer ours even though Philadelphia in my mind is still home.

Twice I photographed Evyenia for Temperance, and since our first shoot she has become an incredible creative peer.  I look back on these images and I knew then that she would be doing ...

Kelsey Dylan for Pulp

In just a few months we will be leaving our first PNW home and moving down to a place I feel like will give me and Nicole a lot more freedom to create and explore.  I think I never fell in love with Pulp because it felt like I was investing into a series that could very easily be taken away from me.

Renting in Seattle we found the perfect place for us, but in our two years here every home like ours has been sold, torn down, and replaced by a suburban mansion.  It has felt like its on...

Life becomes this state of fluctuations and then it's not.  It's hard to explain something you've been doing for a decade when so little of it feels real.  Travel is a strange thing.

You get home, you look at the photos you created for a long time, you reestablish the life you left.  At first home feels strange and unfamiliar.  After a week or two on the road your body and mind just become nomadic.  You get used to living out of a bag.  You get used to ...

We Were Wanderers (diary)

I am on a boat heading up the Rio PreguiƧa thinking about too many things.  Am I always thinking about too many things?  Probably.

I have been reading Jim Harrington lately, and since I first heard his voice on an episode of Parts Unknown his words have echoed with me.  "And to you my loves few as there have been.  Let us pretend it could not have been any other way."

My work is shapes.  My work is journey, love, pain, the loneliness we carry with us to th...

Up until now I have been regularly disappearing on you all to do the work that Nicole and I do.  It's just part of the job. Life on the road is hard.  Explaining a trip with a single post is even harder.  So I want to try something new starting now.

How did I end up in Brazil?  So many things have come together to bring us here.  Right now I am sitting in a cafe, a man is playing the Harp behind me, we have created the image I came for and now we are chasing extr...

Things are pretty crazy right now, but also it feels like pretty much the perfect time to a throwback to a fun shoot I did in the bay, that basically nobody has seen yet!

Why is it the perfect time?  Because tomorrow I head to the Bay for a couple of days before I ultimately head to Brazil for three weeks to photograph Nicole, Lillias, and Pure Rebel.

Why has nobody seen these yet?  Okami did a vote backed poll to see if she would do a Game of Thrones or Star Wars inspire...

Where does confliction come from when trying to establish a body of work?  I struggled with Pulp for a while, and although I was very happy with many of my shoots for the series I had a hard time getting excited about it in a way I struggled describe.

Then I did a shoot recently that sort of put it together in my mind.

There is sort of a possessiveness with art.  Usually if I am shooting in a place that is not mine, I avoid doing anything repetitive.  Because I pref...

What is time off?  I try to leave myself a week after a big trip where I have nothing planned, but it never really seems to work out.  Its amazing how easily a week will fill itself with opportunity.

The more I feel I need the time the more rare the opportunity.  These are the unwritten and unknown rules I have just come to accept.

So it was apparent to life, but not to me, that the 7 days I had planned to recover from 6 weeks traveling and shooting in Europe was n...

Ivory Flame and Nicole Vaunt in Ireland

This industry can be magical in a way that is hard to explain.  Often times I will find myself in a new county where I only know a few people, and then randomly I cross paths with people I have followed for years because just happen to be in the same time and the same place.

I have followed Ivory Flame since 2007.  Basically for as long as I have been shooting.  She is a truly incredible model, and all around amazing person, but we have never had the chance to shoot.  ...

Temperance is (almost) Here!

Four years of photographers, and another two years of editing, I finally launched the project I have been trying to perfect for way too long.  I think as an artist its nearly impossible to know when something is ready, but I feel like this is as close as I can feel...nervous, excited, and terrified.  I can't lie after having my Instagram deleted briefly last month I realized I needed to do this now!

Nicole and I are so excited to hold a physical copy of this book in our hands.  ...

Valentina and Vaunt in Ireland

Traveling internationally to a place you can not really scout due to time constraints means relying on people you meet and stay with, and internet research.  Valentina and I had both came to the same question when it came to nudes in nature in Ireland: "Why hasn't anyone shot in The Burren?"

Then I arrived, and we set out to find answers, and answers we did find.

The Burren is an incredible National Park in western Ireland.  Glacial carved limestone forms incredible deep cracks...

You can't shoot in Vegas without the work being influenced by Vegas.  I think its the light.  You wait until the end of the day for golden hour, and you create with fervor until that light has faded.

For a long time I didn't like Las Vegas all that much, but I've come to love it...as long as its winter.  Where else can you meet up with Hazel and create images that feel perfectly iconic in a backyard.  Maybe its the people there, but it seems like more than that to me. ...

I first met Romi in New Zealand when I was a guest instructor on a workshop in New Zealand.  I was immediately blown away by her enthusiasm for creating an image.  Her excitement for not just her own images but the other models in attendance was simply infectious.  Her presence elevated us all in the face of extreme adversity.

New Zealand kicked our asses.  The weather, bugs, temperature, and work we had to put into every image was crazier than I had experienced befo...

Every now and then I see a place that has not really me written all over it, but I just love it, and want to shoot there.  This little bnb in LA was exactly such a place.  If there is anything I'm not known for its 50's era locations with retro pin up aesthetic, but that could really be because I have never lived in a city where such places are easy to find.

The longer I have done photography the more I realize geography has one of the biggest influences on style.  The pl...

Southern Washington doesn't get its due when it comes to beautiful landscapes.  The Columbia River Gorge landmarks are mostly on the Oregon side of the river, but if you cross the river, and drive just a little ways you can find equally as beautiful places that are infinitely less traveled.
