Trying out new tech.

The earth is spinning off the last tarry plaque of 2021, hopefully dissipating it into the embrace of space to never be remembered again.  My end of the year will be spent hiding under a blanket with an ice-cream bucket on my head with the word "WAR DOME" written across it in glitter-pen.

The last 'painting' of the year.  And it's been a hell of a year for.. basically everyone.

I went a little more illustrative with this one.  It was supposed to be an 'early fall' picture though as autumn became nearly 6 weeks of hospital visits and a month of various specialist/doctor visits after that, there was no way I was getting this done during that time.

So a later autumn picture it is.  And she's still incredibly proud of her little shop.

Lost Art - Little Fires Cover

I've been making an effort to go through old art folders.  I've wanted to start organizing things a little better, but I also have a lot of art and characters that have been largely consigned to the bit-rot folder inside my skull, often forever lost to the void that is the failed neurological meatball that is my brain.

Last of the Falling Leaves - Patron illustration.

Amidst the sheer chaos that October threw my way I was given the chance to draw a character with possibly one of the best names for a goat.  Popcorn, walking over the bridge out of town to watch nature rain it's last leaves of the season.

A calm picture for hopefully calmer days ahead.  It was s joy to draw.

I've been poking away at this picture's colours for a while now, and managed to get the inkwash done this morning over coffee.  

The signs are all still temporary, and not everything was detailed out yet, but I've got the basic colours down.

I've got such a massive backlog of things to ink and colour after I finish the patron illustration for this month.  I'm definitely far, far ahead on sketches I can pick from to say the least.

The Lost Skelly Squeep.

I was going through a reference folder that was mostly trees and fences for a Patron sketch I'm doing and had a folder that wasn't named in there.  Just 'new folder'.  I figured I must have made a sub-folder  for something else and either just forgot to label it or never used it.

Warmup sketches

I've been doing all sorts of warm-up sketches over the last week and a bit.  These are always unstructured, and loose, and often just random things to keep the pen moving.

I had to include Hyrahyttia the Kobold, a character I had forgotten about, and who just had to have a sketch of her own.  She's the world's most helpful kobold, though very few people take her up on the offer.  She's got a big heart at least.

Its a bit hard to believe October is nearly over now.  This year the fall has been a bit of a blur for the same reasons its been fairly stressful.

Today marks a month since my father had to head to the hospital.   He's out now, and is doing far better than he was even just a week ago.

I'm sorry posts have been a bit slow for the first part of the month.  We're still in this transition period regarding my father's health.  There's just this string of complications going on with him, and he's still in the hospital as entire teams (plural) try to assess how he's doing, and I've been going back and forth to visit him.

Rain Interstate

What was the old saying?  "When it rains, container ships filled with thumbtacks and dynamite will fall on your house."

However its been a fairly chaotic four days.  I had to push back work again after my father had a medical episode at his dialysis clinic on Saturday, and ended up having to be brought to the ER again.

A really rough sketch of an idea I had of the 'trio' (gnome, lorrnath and khettu) arriving back at their home-town.  

I like the idea that the three have homes in or near a township.  I personally started to get a bit bored of the 'wandering explorers who have no home, and live out of motels despite having power and heaps of money.' that sometimes becomes a permanent theme with fantasy parties.

I was incredibly late finishing this illustration for July's list-patron due to the wild-hospital-ride (tm) at the end of that month and beginning of August.  However they were supremely understanding, and very gracious in giving me the time to finish this image properly.

I've been in a bit of a 'block' for the greater part of about 4 or more months now.  Setting the sudden and chaotic family health situation aside, I just generally felt a big disconnect with not only the weird little world I write in, but with the entire genre of fantasy in general....

Deep Breaths.

This week, my father has a chance to be released from hospital.  While they found a multitude of problems going on with him, he's doing much better, is far more alert, they still found a 'leak' he's got inside his stomach that's not staunched yet, but the hope is that they can do another 'clamp' to get the little fiend under control.

Just hearing the news that the teams at the University Hospital have all been hopeful of him being stable in the long term was like coming up for air....

It's been a bit of a wild month in these parts.  Whatever wasn't cooking alive in obscene temperatures was on fire and billowing smoke, and we've seen so little rain that the leaves are falling off the trees and the lawn is nearly dead.
