A Part, Apart - off to the printer's

Hello friends,

This is a post to let you know that I have just finished uploading all of the files for the May minicomic, A Part, Apart, to the printer's. According to the Mixam website, I should receive copies back on June 2nd, at which point I will start sending print issues out to physical Minicomic Club members. After those are all safely off in the mail, I will distribute ...

A Part, Apart update

Just a quick note to give an update on the newest minicomic, which has grown from 20 pages to 24. I've subtitled it The Hidden Dominion of Geordie James companion #1, referring to the new middle-grade graphic novel I'm currently in the final stages of completing (I kind of feel like I've been "in the final stages" on it for a good 5-6 months now...). I had plans to write a new eight-page cartoon essay to include in this, but the piece that I've been working on is taking me a ...

Mike Dawson's Monthly Minicomic Club

Today's post is to announce a very, very, soft reboot of the monthly 'zine club, which is just a bit of a rebrand. Instead of being members of the Monthly 'Zine Club, all Patron's now hereby become members of Mike Dawson's Monthly Minicomic Club. Hooray!

"Minicomic" is a word that better describes the self-published booklets I have been mailing to members these past few years. Each issue is usually 2025-05-14 15:04:18 +0000 UTC View Post

May 'Zine of the Month: A Part, Apart

Hello friends,

This post is to announce the May's comic of the Month, A Part, Apart, which is subtitled, The Hidden Dominion of Geordie James companion 'zine #1. This will be either 16 or 20 pages, full-color, digest sized. A good meaty comic, I think!

My newest middle-grade graphic novel will be published in May of 2026, so it's nice, one year out from that date, to be putting together the first of what I think will be at least two, possibly three compan...

Chicken Jockey going into the mail

I got my new 'zine back from the printer's which means I'll be dropping them into the mail this week. Be on the lookout for a copy to appear in your mailbox soon!

This issue features an all new three-page diary comic about The Minecraft Movie, hopefully it's not arriving too late to still coast on that particular pop-cultural phenomenon wave. I missed out on seeing the film as it was meant to be seen,...

CHICKEN JOCKEY!!! - off to the printer's

Hello friends,

I wanted to share with you the cover to the new 'zine I've put together and have sent out to the printer's today: CHICKEN JOCKEY!!!

A black and white, digest sized 'zine, CHICKEN JOCKEY!!! features cartoon essays about the passing of the pop culture torch, from my aging Generation X hands, which have been gripping it so tight for decades now my knuckles have turned white, to the tweens and young teens of today. I am not sure if you know yet what the "Chicken Jockey...

"A Part, Apart" - April 'Zine Cover

Hello friends,

Just wanted to share the cover to the 'zine I'm putting together for April. I'm calling it "A Part, Apart", and it will be an all-new new cartoon essay. I'm currently still figuring out what exactly the piece will be about, I know it will have to do with questions I ask myself about where food comes from and eating meat, as well as maybe some bigger ideas about how we humans like to imagine ourselves much more in control of the world around us than we perhaps actually ar...

Stranger Things - comic pitch

I hit a pretty major milestone with my new graphic novel this past week, I completed the initial coloring pass. Coloring is the stage in the process that is the most labor intensive, I have found, and really for the past 4-5 months I've been working hard every week to make my way through all 236 pages of the book, with not a lot of time for much else (apart from publishing 'zines!).

There's still lots of work left to do on the book, revising, cleaning up, adding back-matter, and of cou...

"Why Did They Come?" - at the printer's

I sent the files for this month's 'zine out to the printer's this morning. They estimate I'll receive copies back around 3/21, though they have been known to arrive earlier than forecasted.

"Why Did They Come?" is 20 pages, full color, and what's called A6 dimensions (4.1x5.8). I was hoping to figure out a way to make this 'zine more cheaply, as I have ideas about it being a nice one to pass ou...

March 'Zine and Upcoming Plans

Hello friends, and happy March!

I am in the process of putting together the 'zine for this month, a mockup of which you can see above. Why Did They Come? will be a 20 page, full color, cartoon essay, updating a cartoon essay that previously ran at The Nib. Physically it will be very similar to the Life During Interesting Times 'zine from all the way back in November 2022. A firmer card stock with the comics inside completely formatted for print. I am very happy with how...

Mike Dawson's Hourly Comics 2025 off to the printer

Hello friends,

Just an update to let you know that I have sent the newest 'zine over to the printer's. It is 16 pages long, 5.5x8.5, digest sized, dimensions I am planning on mostly sticking with for future 'zines, after I tried experimenting with smaller sizes, and ran into a bunch of issues back in October with legibility problems. Live and learn is a good life motto, but also don't annoy your Monthly 'Zine Club with an unreadable monthly 'zine is also a smart one to live by.

Mike Dawson's Monthly 'Zine Club presents Mike Dawson's Hourly Comics 2025 by Mike Dawson

Pithy title.

Here is the cover for the February 'zine. Lots and lots of Mike Dawsons. I saw someone describe the kinds of comics I tend to make a lot of as "topical comics with myself as the main character". That's a comics genre now, and without intending to, I have totally fallen into it.

This issue will be digest-sized, black and white, 16 pages. A copy will be getting mailed to all print members of The Monthly 'Zine Club I would say, during the week of February 24th. The PDF w...

Hourly Comics... the day after

Thanks to everybody who read along with my Hourly Comics yesterday! I wasn't sure how things would go having the holiday fall on a Saturday, but it turned out that we had almost nothing going on here in the Dawson household, so I had plenty of time to work on comics.

You can still read some of my Hourly Comics on my Bluesky account here, or at this 2025-02-02 15:11:41 +0000 UTC View Post

Hourly Comics Day 2025!

I published many of the pages that I created during Hourly Comics Day 2025 here on this post. It's now the day after HCD, and I'm finishing up some of the evening comics that I didn't get to. I'm taking a couple of the pages offline for now, as I'll be compiling all of them into a self-published 'zine that will go out to members of my Monthly 'Zine Club later in February. Consider signing up to become a print or digital subscriber to get your copy.

Plotting Out Hourly Comics Day

February 1st is Hourly Comics Day, and I am setting a goal for myself to properly throw myself into the exercise to see if it's something I can successfully complete. I made the below comic last year, which doesn't meet the requirements, but I think is pretty funny nevertheless.

January 'Zine: Wüff Comix!

Hello friends, I hope everybody has been enjoying the holidays and has a wonderful New Year's next week. I mentioned at the end of my last post, I had some ideas to make some dog-related comics for my next 'zine, and that is what I am doing! I'm pleased to share with you the cover image to Wüff Comix!

I was never allowed many pets growing up, apart from looking after a stray outdoors cat for a few years, we never had any other feline or canine companions, so I am making up for that in ...

mammal facts - digital download

These two images have nothing to do with my mammal facts 'zine, but I was just thinking about them this morning as we enter Christmas week. I do like some of the cross-hatching though, and the comic is notable for being one of the last ti...

In Conclusion...

Hello friends,

I just wanted to post a small year-end wrap-up post. 2024 was a mixed bag for me personally, we've had kind of a rough past 24 months, my father-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of 2023, he passed about a year ago, which left my mother-in-law in a bad spot financially. She moved in with us at the end of the Summer, and has been living here while she tries to get back on her feet. On the list of things I am very concerned about happening in this count...
