Thoughts after the Yankees trade Luis Cessa and Justin Wilson

Whatever you do, don't eat the chili, Luis. (Presswire)

Well, we won’t be able to say the Yankees were inactive at this year’s trade deadline. Following last night’s win the Yankees announced they’ve sent Luis Cessa and Justin Wilson to the Reds for a player to be named later. That co...

The trade deadline is exactly one week away and Greg Allen and Rougned Odor have played well enough lately to convince the Yankees they don’t need to do anything. I'm kidding, but it sounds like a thing the Yankees would do, right? Anyway, the Yankees are on pace to go 85-77 with 67 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

1. Weekly observations. The Yankees did something last night for the first time since June 15th: they scored a run with Jordan Montgomery on the mou...

The second half is off to a roaring start, huh? The Yankees have another COVID-19 outbreak, this time among the players, and they’re currently in a holding pattern. Let’s get to the thoughts. Today’s post is a little shorter than usual because the Yankees haven’t played in a while, and also because Tuesday’s post was pretty long and 2021-07-16 13:43:38 +0000 UTC View Post

Tonight the Yankees begin what could be a season-defining stretch. Three games in Houston, four games against the Red Sox, two games against the Phillies, four games in Boston, then three games in Tampa. That’s 14 games against the best the American League has to offer (plus two against the Phillies). We should know, with a great deal of certainty, whether the Yankees have a real chance to contend this year after those 14 games (the last of which is the day before the trade deadline, conven...

Current records indicate it will take 95 wins to reach the postseason. The Yankees need to go 54-28 the rest of the way to win 95 games. That’s a 107-win pace. The good news: it’s easier to play at a 107-win pace over 82 games than 162 games. The bad news: the Yankees have to play at a 107-win pace the rest of the season just to go on the road in the Wild Card Game. Bleak. The Yankees are on pace to go 83-79 with 82 games remaining. Let’s get to today’s thoughts.

I’m starting to think the team that has to scratch and claw and turn triple plays and make dramatic late-inning comebacks to beat the Blue Jays and Royals isn’t all that formidable. The Yankees certainly haven’t looked formidable most of the year, and especially not when they play the teams they’re chasing in the standings. The Yankees are on pace to go 84-78 with 85 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

Gerrit Cole has a 2.33 ERA (2.59 FIP) with 123 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 96.2 innings this season. He is incredible. And the Yankees are 8-7 in his 15 starts. This is what I get for making fun of the Mets and Jacob deGrom the last few years. The Yankees are on pace to go 88-74 with 88 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

The Yankees are 66-59 in 125 games dating back to last season, which is an 86-win pace in a 162-game season. They have luxury taxed and galaxy brained their way into an 86-win roster after back-to-back 100-win seasons. I’d be impressed if I wasn’t annoyed. Here are Tuesday morning’s thoughts Monday night because it’s an off-day, and there’s no reason to wait around to hit publish.

Once again, the Yankees were unable to finish a sweep. At least this time they had a lead in the ninth inning rather than get blown out. Bad time for Aroldis Chapman’s worst ever outing, eh? The Yankees are 2-7 and have been outscored 52-30 when they have a chance to sweep this year. They’re on pace to go 85-77 with 99 games remaining. All things considered, splitting four games with the Rays is a good outcome, but dropping the finale with Gerrit Cole on the mound is a tough pill to swallow. The Yankees are 6-6 in Cole’s starts this year. They can’t hit and they can’t win with their ace on the mound (not that Cole pitched well yesterday). This team is a chore to watch. The Yankees are on pace to go 88-74 with 105 games remaining. Here are today’s thoughts.

The April Yankees are back, baby. The rotation is shaky, the offense can’t hit, and the defense is booting the ball left and right. Watching the championship window close on this core in real time is not an enjoyable experience. It always happens sooner than you expect too. I’ve watched every game this season and I have no idea how the Yankees are 29-21. They feel so much worse. The pitching has been great! But the offense has been among the least productive in baseball. Every game is like getting teeth pulled. Anyway, the Yankees are on pace to go 94-68 with 112 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

A 7-3 road trip that included a no-hitter? I’ll take that all year long, thank you very much. The offense is still slogging along but the Yankees keep winning series (7-0-2 in their last nine), and that’s all that matters. Just win series and everything will take care of itself. I can’t remember the last time I had this little confidence in a Yankees offense. Maybe 2013? Jordan Lyles objectively stinks and last night he had no real trouble with the Yankees, a team that has scored 22 runs in their last eight games against the Not Orioles. Won’t be too long until Aaron Judge gets nothing to hit with the injuries piling up. The Yankees are on pace to go 87-75 with 121 games remaining. To today’s thoughts.

It’s too bad the Yankees couldn’t complete the sweep yesterday, because that series would’ve gone down as the most satisfying, most cathartic series in a very long time. Maybe since the five-game Boston Massacre sweep in Fenway Park in 2006? Also, shoutout to the YES Network for never cutting the field mics and letting the profanity-filled chants fly all three games. At long last, Yankees fans have someone to boo other than the Yankees. Good look at Aaron Judge's contact rate improvements by Owen McGrattan. Last year he cut his strikeout rate and increased his in-zone contact rate, though it was an unusual 60-game season and easy to disregard as sample size noise. Well, Judge has improved those things again early this year. Check it out. The Yankees are on pace to go 71-91 with 137 games remaining. View Post

Sorry Tauchman, but this is a one Mike town. (Getty)
