December 12th, 2023: Ohtani, González, Vivas, Yamamoto, Hot Stove Rumors, Minor League Deals, Roster Check-In

Do you know what happened 10 years ago today? 10 years ago today Robinson Canó officially signed with the Mariners (the agreement was reported a few days earlier). Usually when I share these “this date in Yankees history” nuggets, my reaction is wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long! I feel so old! In this case it’s more like wow, it’s only been 10 years? It feels like Canó left a lifetime ago. Robbie is the Yankees’ all-time leader among Dominican-born players with +44.4 W...

December 8th, 2023: Rule 5 Draft, Mailbag

It has been two days and Juan Soto is still hitless as a Yankee. They gave up Mike King for this guy? Cashman failed. Anyway, during his conference call Thursday, Brian Cashman confirmed the Padres asked for Anthony Volpe and Jasson Domínguez initially, but he wasn’t going to do that. Can’t blame the Padres for asking. Gotta at least try. Here’s what I wrote about the Soto trade and here now i...

Thoughts after the Yankees trade for Juan freaking Soto (and Trent Grisham)

Give up a homer to him, then get traded for him. It’s a tough business, Randy.

The Yankees entered the offseason needing to do something to liven up the offense and to some extent the franchise itself. That something arrived late Wednesday night. The Yan...

UPDATE (10:07am ET): Jack Curry says Juan Soto talks have continued and "a trade is likely," and mentioned Mike King and Drew Thorpe could headline a package of 4-5 players. He cautions there still need to be medical reviews and all that, but let's be real here, the YES Network's...

Quick thoughts after the Yankees trade for Alex Verdugo

There's a new No. 99 in the Bronx (I kid, I kid)

The Yankees have a new left-handed hitting outfielder, but not the one we all want. Late Tuesday night the Yankees acquired Alex Verdugo from the Red Sox (!) for minor league righties Richard Fitts, Nick Judice, and Greg Weissert. 2023-12-06 03:23:41 +0000 UTC View Post

The 2023 Winter Meetings are underway in Nashville and, one day in, it’s been pretty quiet. I had some free time Monday and figured I should cobble together the latest Yankees-related and Yankees-adjacent hot stove happenings, so let’s recap them now. I can’t promise similar posts Wednesday and/or Thursday, but I’ll try my best. Depends on my workload at CBS more than anything (and also on there being enough stuff to write about).

The 2023 Winter Meetings are underway in Nashville and it felt wrong to wait until Tuesday to run this post, so let’s get it out there bright and early Monday morning, before things start happening. Remember, the draft lottery is Tuesday night (5:30pm ET on MLB Network). The Yankees have a chance at the No. 1 pick because they missed the postseason, but it’s a long shot. A long shot is still be...

Quick thoughts on the latest Juan Soto rumors

Hark, rumors.

The rumblings about a potential Juan Soto trade are growing louder. Jeff Passan (subs. req’d) says some in the game believe it could happen by the end of the Winter Meetings, 2023-12-02 01:06:48 +0000 UTC View Post

UPDATE: I accidentally hit publish early. This is the completed version of the post.

Earlier this week Yoshinobu Yamamoto won his third straight Pacific League MVP. He’s the third player in NPB history to win three straight MVPs, joining Hall of Fame pitcher Hisashi Yamada (1976-78) and the great Ichiro Suzuki (1994-96). "He is a legend of the franchise. I'm happy to have done the same as him,” Yamamoto told the 2023-11-30 17:16:38 +0000 UTC View Post

The Thanksgiving weekend is over and MLB’s Winter Meetings are a week away. It’s time to get back to business. The hot stove is beginning to heat up and I hope the Yankees do something soon, mostly because I’m bored. The Jake Bauers trade can only hold me over so long. Here now is Tuesday morning's post Monday afternoon. I'm publishing early because it's the time of year when things can happe...

Things are really quiet this offseason, no? Not just with the Yankees. I mean every team. By this time last offseason Teoscar Hernández had been traded and Anthony Rizzo had re-signed with the Yankees, among other moves. So far this offseason’s major move is Abraham Toro getting traded to the Athletics rather than non-tendered. Even rumors are scarce. Maybe it’s the weak free agent class, maybe everyone is waiting for Yoshinobu Yamamoto to get posted, maybe it’s something else. I dunno...

Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner held press conferences earlier this week and yeesh, the less said about them, the better. There was one small yet important piece of news though: Cashman confirmed there are no new injuries or surgeries to report since the season ended. I guess that means Aaron Judge’s toe surgery is scheduled for sometime in March. Kidding! Or am I? Let’s get to today’s post. As a reminder, the Offseason Plan will be published Monday. The 2023 MLB season is over and the 2023-24 offseason has arrived. Here’s the offseason calendar and what each date means for the Yankees, in case you missed it. I can firm up some dates now that the World Series is over and the offseason has begun. Here’s what’s coming:

The Yankees and the 2023-24 Offseason Calendar

The Rangers are the 2023 World Series champions and the offseason is here. The Yankees have been in offseason mode for over a month now and they should – should – be active this winter. They missed the postseason and posted their worst record since 1992, and there are holes aplenty on the roster. This team isn’t a tweak or two away from contending. With that in mind, here is the offseason calendar and a look at what each date means for the Yankees.

Poll: Five hypothetical Juan Soto trade packages

Hal: “What more do you want? He’s already wearing pinstripes!”

By almost any measure, the Padres were the most disappointing team in baseball this season. They came into the season expecting to contend for a World Series title, and instead they went 82-80 and missed the postseason. And they had to win 14 of their final 16 games just to finish with a record that good. A colossal disappo...

The final series of 2023 is upon us. This feels like the final series of 2013, when the 85-win Yankees closed out their season against the hard-tanking Astros in Houston.
